MANILA, Philippines — Defective printed ballots for the May 2022 elections polls increased to nearly 179,000, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Thursday.
Comelec Commissioner George Garcia saod that from almost 106,000 defective ballots, the new total has reached 178,990.
Garcia, however, noted that the 178,990 defective ballots are only less than one percent of the total 67 million ballots needed for the May 9 elections.
“Ang atin po ngayon na defective ballots, which would be subject of reprinting, ay 178,990… representing 0.28 percent nung lahat ng na-print so far na mga balota,” he said in a press briefing.
(Our current defective ballots, which would be subject to reprinting, are 178,990… representing 0.28 percent of the total ballots printed so far.)
“So, still very manageable, napakaliit. Ang importante nakikita ‘yung mga ganitong problema, diperensiya,” he added.
(So, still very manageable, just a small figure. What’s important is we are spotting such problems and discrepancies.)
Garcia said that the number of defective ballots may still increase as six million ballots are subject to verification and six percent more are yet to be printed.
He assured that the defective ballots will be burned.
According to Comelec, 63,856,233 or 94.68 percent of the 67,442,616 needed ballots are already printed as of March 31.
