Lecture on Buhisan watershed set

In celebration of Cebu’s iconic landmark Fuente Osmeña’s 100th year, Hamiling Binilin (Hambin) is sponsoring a talk on the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve.

The Buhisan: An Eco-cultural Tourism Destination lecture will be on March 10 at 4 p.m. at the Virgilio Yap Chapel, Metropolitan Cebu Cathedral Museum.

It will be delivered by Harvard University-educated landscape architect Socorro B. Atega.

Since 1984, Atega has been involved in her profession.

In 2009, the Professional Regulation Commission awarded her as Outstanding Professional in Landscape Architecture, and in 2008, the University of San Carlos awarded her as Outstanding Alumna of the Year.

She is also active in professional and civic organizations. At present, she is a Commissioner of the Cebu City Parks and Playground Commission and was the past president and executive director of Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water.

Atega has had numerous landscape consultancies in recreational facilities and resorts, housing and subdivision development, industrial, urban spaces and parks and commercial in the Philippines.

Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve is a major water source in Cebu City. The construction of the dam was a public infrastructure to supply potable water for Cebuanos due to water-borne diseases during the American colonial period.

Festivities upon completion of the dam were celebrated with the commissioning of fountain in Fuente Osmeña circle.  The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the historic event was last Feb. 13.

Hambin is a SEC-registered association of the pioneering graduates of the Graduate Certificate Course in Cebuano Heritage Studies of USC. The lecture is part of the group’s lecture series, which is supported by the USC History Department.
