MANILA, Philippines — Chinese nationals topped the list of foreign residents who took part in this year’s annual registration of aliens, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

Of the 133,557 registrants, 63,659 were Chinese, followed by 17,728 Indians and 7,780 Americans.

The annual listup of resident aliens is conducted during the first 60 calendar days of every year pursuant to the provisions of the Alien Registration Act of 1950.

According to BI, the number of this year’s reportees was only slightly higher than the 130,148 aliens who filed their report in 2021.

But this year’s figure was still lower as compared to 2020 data. In 2020, prior to the closing of borders, the BI saw 181,746 reportees, according to BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval.

BI said they were expecting a lower number of reportees due to COVID-19. Other nationalities in the top 10 this year are 6,653 Taiwanese, 4991 South Koreans, 4,464 Vietnamese, 3,725 Japanese, 2,929 Indonesians, 2,705 Britons, and 2,103 Malaysians.
