MANILA, Philippines — The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said it would ask for at least a P200 increase in the daily minimum wage in Central Visayas.

Minimum wage earners in Central Visayas currently earn P404 per day.

Alan Tanjusay, spokesperson for TUCP, said they would file their wage hike petition with the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board in Cebu City on Monday.

TUCP will also file petitions for an increase in the minimum wages in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Davao regions.

A week ago, the labor group petitioned the regional wage board in Metro Manila to increase the P537 daily minimum wage to P1,007 to keep workers and their families from hunger as prices have shot up due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Luis Corral, vice president of TUCP, said they would ask for an increase of “more than P200” in the daily minimum wage in Central Visayas.

He said they would file their wage hike petitions for the other regions by Thursday.

Corral justified the petition by saying the Russia-Ukraine conflict since Feb. 24 that led to skyrocketing fuel prices merely “exacerbated the already rising cost of goods and commodities.”
