Tigbauan LGU remembers liberation of Panay, Romblon
ILOILO CITY — The municipality of Tigbauan on Thursday, March 18, commemorated the liberation of Panay and Romblon from the Japanese forces 77 years ago.
An activity was held in the Panay Landing Memorial where attendees offered flowers for the veterans of Free Panay Guerilla Forces who fought to liberate the island from the Japanese forces.
Present were the families of the veterans, the elected officials and employees of the Municipality of Tigbauan, Civil Society Organizations, the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Coast Guard, 61st Hunter Infantry Battalion of Camp Monte Claro of Miag-ao, Knights of Columbus, Tigbaw Musikero, as well as the officials and residents of Parara Norte and Parara Sur.
Proclamation No. 430 signed in 1989 by late president Corazon C. Aquino declared March 18 as the Victory Day on the islands of Panay and Romblon, including the cities of Iloilo and Roxas.
Col. Hannibal Lipardo, regional president of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), spearheaded the ceremony to pay tribute to fellow veterans for their contribution during World War II.
Article continues after this advertisementIn his message, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said that Iloilo City was where the country had the most successful resistance against the Japanese, which is something that Ilonggos can be proud of.
Article continues after this advertisement“We may have a hybrid celebration today caused by the restrictions of this pandemic, but our courage and virtues as Ilonggos are unwavering. It is the same courage and bravery that made us victorious 77 years ago that will help us achieve great things,” he said.
Treñas also challenged the youth to never forget history and to remember patriotism and love for country.
