Misamis occidental mayoralty bet shooting

ILIGAN CITY—An independent candidate who is running for mayor of Calamba, Misamis Occidental was hurt after being shot by unidentified gunmen at 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 13.

Mayoralty bet George Matunog Jr., 55, was coming out of a convenience store and was walking towards his home in Purok 1, Poblacion of Calamba town when the motorcycle-riding suspects, one of them wearing a yellow jacket, stopped and shot him once, hitting him in the back of the neck, the bullet coming out of his right cheek, according to Police Col. Anthony Placido, provincial police director of Misamis Occidental.

Matunog was rushed to the hospital for immediate medical treatment, police said.

“There was only one shot and it hit him at the back of his neck and went straight to his right cheek,” Placido said. Police are still trying to determine the calibers of the guns used by the gunmen.
