The tandem of presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte called on the government to suspend the excise tax on fuel imports to cushion the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The tandem said the proposed suspension of excise tax on fuel imports would be a form of subsidy for oil companies.
“But oil companies should not take advantage of succeeding increases in fuel prices in the world market as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues,” they said in a statement.
“They should not aspire for a big profit at this time because the public will be the one to suffer,” they added.
They said the nonstop oil price hikes would also trigger a rise in the prices of basic commodities, adding burden to the economic struggles of Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic.
