Grenade blast in Caloocan City leaves 5 injured

Five people were reported to be in serious condition when a still unidentified man on a passenger jeepney lobbed a grenade in front of a KTV bar in Caloocan City on Saturday night.

The explosion happened at around 10 p.m. in front of the Lady Ash Bar on Captain Samano Street in Barangay (village) 175.

The victims were deep in conversation while waiting for customers when a jeepney stopped in front of the establishment.

A man then got out, lobbed an MK2 fragmentation grenade at the group and fled, according to Chief Inspector Rodrigo Soriano, head of the Caloocan police investigation unit.

The police identified the wounded as floor manager Marlyn Velarde, 41; bouncer Rodel Macario, 37; and guest relation officers Gwendelyn Corneta, Jenelyn Tungala and Rosalyn Favillar.

They were taken to Jose Rodriguez Memorial Hospital although they were later transferred to East Avenue Medical Center.

“I heard their injuries were serious that’s why they had to be taken to another hospital,” Soriano said over the phone.

The police said they were trying to determine the grenade thrower’s motive as well as his identity.
