MANILA, Philippines — COVID-19 deaths in the country averaged at 35 per day in February, the Department of Health reported Tuesday.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the number is significantly low compared to fatalities in September 2021 when there was a Delta variant case surge.
“’Pag tinignan ho natin, napakaliit po ng mga deaths natin mula po nung nag-umpisa ang taon na ito kumpara doon po sa mga previous months natin from last year, especially during the Delta situation,” she said in an online media forum.
(When we look at it, our number of deaths was small when this year started compared to the previous months from last year.)
“As of February 27, the average number of death for February is only at 35 deaths—the average number of deaths per day compared to September of 2021 which was the peak… during the Delta situation wherein we had 271 deaths average per day during that time,” she added.
Vergeire noted that most who had severe infections are unvaccinated against the virus.
“Nakikita po natin na mas mataas po ang risk at mas mataas ang bilang ng mga hindi bakunado na nagkakaroon ng severe infections, nag-occupy ng ICU at mga namamatay,” she explained.
(We see that there is a higher risk and a higher number of unvaccinated individuals who had severe infections, occupying ICU and many unvaccinated people die.)
To date, 63 million individuals in the country are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
