A lawmaker has urged President Duterte to appoint a new chair and two new commissioners to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to replace three commissioners who retired early this month. Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez stressed that the 2022 elections are just months away and the poll body “needs all the help it can get.” Rodriguez said the Comelec with a full complement of seven commissioners “is definitely more desirable and helpful than having just four commissioners.” The vacancies stemmed from the retirement of former Chair Sheriff Abas and ex-Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and Antonio Kho Jr. earlier this month. —Julie M.
