Alleged NPA slain in Quezon clash

LUCENA CITY––An alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed in an encounter Monday with government security forces in the island town of Polillo in Quezon province, a report said Tuesday.

The Quezon police said Army soldiers led by Captain Ronaldo Fuentes encountered at 11:20 a.m. an undetermined number of armed communist guerrillas in the village of Binibitinan.

The battle lasted for 10 minutes, after which the rebels withdrew, leaving behind the body of their slain comrade, identified only as alias “Facio,” an alleged NPA leader.

The soldiers reportedly recovered one M653 rifle, a rifle grenade, a hand grenade, two anti-personnel mines, three magazines, bullets, six mobile phones, personal belongings, and documents left by the rebels at the encounter site.

Troops have been deployed to pursue the rebels.
