Stronger northeast monsoon to bring light rain

The northeast monsoon or “amihan” may slightly gain strength next week from its current weak state, the weather bureau said on Friday. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) expects the northeast monsoon to be felt again in most parts of Luzon such as Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region and even as far as Metro Manila and southern Luzon, particularly Calabarzon. Based on forecast data, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Babrina said the weather system was presently affecting only the provinces of Cagayan and Aurora. “We expect that ‘amihan’ would again gain its strength next week, but it won’t prolong too much compared to what we have experienced in January,” Babrina said. By next week, Babrina pointed out that the effects of the northeast monsoon would only last for one to three days only. “We expect that the slightly stronger ‘amihan’ would bring light rain, and of course, the cold temperatures but not too cold like what happened last month,” Babrina said. The weather bureau is not expecting any low pressure area in the coming days. —Dempsey Reyes
