MANILA, Philippines — Even as COVID-19 infections continue to drop, the total number of areas placed under granular lockdown nationwide slightly rose to 590, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Sunday.

The PNP on Saturday said 489 areas were under granular lockdown.

Granular lockdowns refer to localized community lockdowns —a street or an entire condominium building — where residents will not be allowed to exit or reenter for a period not shorter than 14 days.

According to the PNP, only six of the areas under granular lockdown are in Metro Manila, all of which were reported by the Manila Police District.

Meanwhile, the Ilocos Region Police Regional Office (PRO) reported 105 areas under granular lockdown, PRO Cagayan Valley reported a total of 81 areas, PRO Mimaropa with seven areas, and PRO Zamboanga Peninsula with only one.

PRO Cordillera, on the other hand, continued to report the highest number of areas under granular lockdown at 302.

A total of 1,326 individuals are affected by these lockdowns, said the PNP.

As of Sunday, Feb. 6, the country currently has 126,227 active cases of COVID-19 after the Department of Health reported only 8,361 new COVID-19 infections and more 18,431 recoveries.
