TACLOBAN CITY — At least 37 members of the Mamanwa tribe living in a remote village in Almeria town, Biliran province received the vaccines against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) during the recently-held regional vaccination campaign that ended last last Feb. 2.
The Mamanwas, living in Barangay Caucab, received the Janssen vaccine, said Jelyn Lopez Malibago, regional information officer of the Department of Health (DOH).
She said that none of the Mamanwas who were given the jabs resisted.
The vaccination drive was conducted by health workers at the village, about four kilometers away from the town proper of Almeria.
Of the 37 Mamanwas who received the vaccine, nine of them belong to the pediatric group.
Malibago said about 773,395 individuals from different parts of Eastern Visayas have received the vaccines during the three-day regional vaccination campaign.
Of the number, 299,351 were from Leyte province which includes Tacloban City; Samar with 146,209; Northern Samar, 124,563; Southern Leyte, 96,560; Eastern Samar, 80,409 and Biliran, 19,304.
The DOH reported that there are now more than 2.21 million in the region who were fully vaccinated against the virus. The number is more than 45 percent of its population of 4.86 million.
