Child rape suspect dies after tasting Binondo mob’s fury

A 49-year-old man accused of raping of a 10-year-old girl died shortly before midnight on Thursday at a Manila hospital, four days after his arrest.

Rolando Gomez of Gate 54 Parola Compound in Binondo was allegedly beaten up by an angry mob, suffering head wounds, before he was turned over on Sunday to the custody of the Manila Police District’s Meisic Station 11. Gomez was in his cell when he had a fit of convulsions on Thursday afternoon.

He was rushed to Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Prior to his death, his cell mates often saw him lying on the floor, nursing a deep cut in his right eyebrow and bruises on both eyes. Jeannette I. Andrade
