MANILA, Philippines — Former Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gringo Honasan clinched the 11th spot in the senatorial slate of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Davao City mayor’s tandem Sara-Duterte Carpio in the 2022 election.
Aspiring president Marcos said he believes Honasan would “accomplish a lot in the Senate, coming up with laws that will help ensure better lives for our countrymen.”
Honasan is seeking a Senate comeback, where he was a senator from 2007 to 2013. In the 2016 elections, he lost his bid for the vice presidency.
He was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the DICT chief in 2019, after his term as senator ended.
Honasan was among the prominent figures in the 1986 People Power Revolution that brought down the Marcos administration.
He also took part in coup attempts during the administration of former president Corazon Aquino, who succeeded Marcos.
Duterte earlier endorsed Honasan’s senatorial bid.
“With our senatorial slate in the Senate, we will achieve our vision of steering the country towards greatness. We have the common vision of making every Filipino proud of our race. Gusto naming ang Pilipino ay taas noo kahit kanino,” Marcos said.
As the tandem adopts Honasan in its senatorial slate, Marcos and Duterte also clinched the endorsement of Honasan’s Reform Party.
According to the Marcos-Sara Duterte tandem, also known as the UniTeam, party officials led by its president James Layug signed a resolution declaring their support for the candidacies of Marcos and Duterte-Carpio.
