MANILA, Philippines —The defense team will have difficulty defending Chief Justice Renato Corona, a prosecution spokesman said Friday, adding that the panel has established a strong case against the impeached chief magistrate.
“The task ahead for them (defense) is very difficult,” prosecution spokesman and Marikina City Representative Romero Quimbo told INQUIRER.net in a telephone interview.
“Of course, I’m biased. But I think that because of the evidence we have presented, the burden of overcoming it is heavy,” Quimbo said.
He said among the evidence that allegedly incriminates Corona are:
- The P31 million he has in several bank accounts but declared a much lower amount in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth
- Non-declaration of several high value properties in an affluent neighborhood in Taguig City
- Termination of bank accounts with a total of P37 million deposit on the same day that the House of Representatives impeached him.
But Quino clarified: “I’m not saying na hindi nila kaya, I’m just saying that they will have difficulty.”
Asked for comment, the defense team said the public should wait for the panel’s presentation of evidence and witnesses before making any judgement.
“They (prosecutors) are entitled to their opinion. But let’s just wait for the defense’s presentation,” said defense spokesman Atty. Tranquil Salvador III.
The prosecution is set to submit its formal offer of evidence anytime Friday, while the defense team was given until March 7, Wednesday next week to submit its opposition. The Senate, acting as the impeachment court, has suspended the hearing until March 12.
