MANILA, Philippines — The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has discouraged travel to the Philippines due to its “very high level of COVID-19” cases.

The country was listed by the US CDC under “Level Four: Very High,” the topmost tier on its travel health notices along with the warning: “Avoid travel to the Philippines.”

“If you must travel to the Philippines, make sure you are vaccinated and up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines,” it added.

Still, the CDC reminded its citizens that even if they were up to date with their vaccines, they might remain at risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. It also issued a reminder that anyone 2 years or older should properly wear a well-fitting mask in indoor public spaces and follow all requirements in the Philippines.

According to the CDC, it uses COVID-19 data reported by the World Health Organization and other official sources in determining travel health notice levels.

It said that COVID-19 case counts and new case trajectories and incidence rates were the criteria for deciding a destination’s travel health notice level.
