MANILA, Philippines — A Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso presidency will be friendly to “responsible” mining but hostile to unregulated backyard mining operations, according to the Manila mayor.

During a TV interview aired on Thursday, the Aksyon Demokratiko standard-bearer said he planned to allow mining in the country as long as the players adhere to the “gold standard” of environmental protection.

“We have to be aggressive. We have to be practical but at the same time we have to be responsible also for the next generation,” Domagoso added.

But he said he shunned backyard mining operations that were mostly unregulated and led to the destruction of the environment.
