Guanzon not yet done, dares Marcos’ party lawyer to a fistfight

MANILA, Philippines — The feisty commissioner Rowena Guanzon of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is not yet done with her tirades against the lawyer of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’ party who called her a “incorrigible narcissist” and a “yellow.”

Guanzon on Saturday dared George Briones, General Counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, to a fistfight.

“Suntukan kami sa Iloilo Plaza,” Guanzon said in a Twitter post, referring to Briones. “Mayor [Jerry] Trenas ang referee.”

(Let’s go to a fistfight in Iloilo Plaza. Mayor Jerry Trenas will be the referee.)

She added: “I have Manny Pacquiao boxing gloves hahaha!”

The heated exchange began after Guanzon, who serves as the presiding commissioner of the Comelec’s First Division that handles the three consolidated cases to stop Marcos Jr.’s presidential bid, revealed in a television interview on Thursday that she voted to disqualify the son and namesake of the late dictator.

Briones on Friday said Guanzon “illegally disclosed and leaked with undue haste” her decision to disqualify Marcos Jr.

For that matter, Briones appealed to Comelec en banc to investigate Guanzon, adding that she should be disbarred, with her retirement benefits and lifetime pension be forfeited.

“Commissioner Guanzon has shown herself to be an incorrigible narcissist and has shown a insatiable craving for posting in social media like twitter which is not proper for a judge,” Briones said in a statement.

“Commissioner Guanzon’s mad rush to come out with a decision of the first division bares her true color which is yellow,” he added.

Guanzon, incensed by Briones’ remarks, dared Briones to a televised debate, which the latter declined, pointing out that they are both members of Sigma Rho Fraternity.

In response to Briones’ decline of her dare, Guanzon said: “Brods, pegulps nyo nga itong si brod Briones.”
