MANILA, Philippines — New COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal are now on a downward trend following the spike in cases due to the Omicron variant, OCTA Research said Friday.

“NCR, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal on a downward trend in new cases. Rizal has improved to moderate risk, while NCR, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Quezon are still at high risk,” OCTA Research fellow Guido David said over Twitter.

The reproduction number in Metro Manila is currently 0.52; Batangas, 1.01; Cavite, 0.89; Laguna, 0.95; Quezon, 1.35; and Rizal, 0.69.

Reproduction number is the estimated number of new cases from a COVID-19 positive individual. David said the ideal reproduction number is less than one to indicate decreased transmission.

The indicators used by OCTA Research in identifying risk classifications are based on US nonprofit COVID Act Now and are different from the metrics being used by the Department of Health.
