SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union—The San Fernando city government in La Union province announced Thursday that Mayor Hermenegildo “Dong” Gualberto had tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the city government said Gualberto started to feel symptoms of the disease on Jan. 16 and went immediately into isolation.
Gualberto said in a separate statement that his symptoms were mild and that he was fully vaccinated and had a booster shot against the disease.
The city government said Gualberto’s office and the entire city hall would continue their operations.
“I will be working from home and will ensure that our service is not affected by the virus,” said Gualberto.
As COVID-19 cases spiked in the city, Gualberto reminded residents to adhere strictly to standard health protocols and get vaccinated.
The latest data show that the city has 823 active COVID-19 cases.
