COVID-19 kills another 82 in PH; death toll now at 53,044

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s COVID-19 death toll reached 53,044 as the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday the passing of 82 patients.

Of the latest fatality count, the DOH said 56 occurred this January while eight happened in October, 15 in September, one in July, one in May, and one in January 2021.

According to the health agency, the current total number of fatalities (53,044) accounts for only 1.61 percent of the total 3,293,625 confirmed coronavirus cases in the country to date.

Also on Wednesday, the DOH reported that 22,958 more people contracted COVID-19 and that 270,728 are currently sick of the disease.

It also reported that the top regions with the most number of new infections in the recent two weeks are Metro Manila with 7,861 (36%), Region 4-A with 4,647 (21%), and Region 3 with 2,049 (9%).

Based on the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Case Tracker, the SARS-COV-2 virus hit 334.1 million and killed 5.55 million across the globe since 2020.
