Palawan records 1st person with Omicron variant

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY—The first patient with COVID-19 Omicron variant has been reported in Palawan province.

Dr. Faye Labrador, Palawan Provincial Health Office chief, confirmed Tuesday that a 26-year-old female from El Nido had tested positive for the Omicron variant after a six-day stay in Metro Manila.

The person traveled on Dec. 24, 2021 to Manila with a return flight on Jan. 6. Upon arrival, she completed home quarantine for seven days.

“The RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) genome sequencing was done on December 29, 2021. However, her flight was canceled. The flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa City occurred on January 6,” Labrador said.

The result from the genome laboratory came out only on Jan. 15, with the fully vaccinated patient showing no symptoms and was considered “recovered” from the virus.

The latest city health bulletin shows that 619 persons remained positive for COVID-19 from a total of 10,277 reported patients, with 9,435 recovered and 223 casualties.
