MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) expects a big turnout in the 2022 elections even with the COVID-19 pandemic, spokesperson James Jimenez said on Tuesday.

“No, in fact, we are expecting a high turnout,” Jimenez said over ABS-CBN News Channel when asked if the poll body is expecting a low voter turnout.

He also used the example of the Palawan plebiscite to illustrate his point.

“In Palawan last March, we expected that there would be low turnout because of COVID. It turned out that the voters came in droves: from 40 percent projections, we actually had a 61 percent voter turnout,” he pointed out.

The Comelec said that 65,745,529 Filipinos at least 18 years old are registered to vote, 3,901,758 more than the 61,843,771 registered for the last election in 2019.
