MANILA, Philippines — Additional 43 deaths brought the country’s total COVID-19 death count to 52,858 on Saturday, said the Department of Health (DOH).

According to the DOH, 38 of these deaths occurred in January, the highest recorded in a month since the year started.

The rest were backlogs from 2021 with 1 death in October, 1 in September, 1 in August, 1 in May, and another 1 in March. DOH said these backlogs are still due to the late encoding of death information to DOH’s COVIDKaya.
