The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is willing to tweak “in due time” the 40-kilometer-per-hour (kph) speed limit being eyed for passenger buses plying Metro Manila routes.

“The 40-kph speed limit is not etched in stone. But we need a reference point. If we see that there is a need to increase it after a period in time, then we will adjust the speed limit,” LTFRB Chairman James Jacob said in a press statement issued Wednesday.

Earlier, the LTFRB announced that it would require Metro bus operators to install speed limiter devices on their vehicles to help ensure that their drivers would not be able to go beyond 40 kph.

The new traffic policy will be implemented on a staggered basis with the issuance of an order next month. By December, however, all buses in the metropolis, including some 7,000 provincial buses, must comply with the LTFRB directive.
