MANILA, Philippines — More than half of the over 30,000 new COVID-19 cases recently recorded in the country were logged in Metro Manila, a fellow of the independent pandemic monitor Octa Research said on Thursday.

Guido David on Twitter said that 56 percent or 18,140 of the 32,246 cases posted on Wednesday were from Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, 6,944 of Wednesday’s new cases were listed in the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region.

This accounts for 22 percent of the new COVID-19 infections.

Ten percent or 3,326 cases, on the other hand, were recorded in Central Luzon, David said.

There is no need to tighten restrictions yet in Metro Manila despite the recent uptick of COVID-19 cases in the region, the independent pandemic monitor Octa Research Group said Monday.

He added that the remaining 12 percent was recorded in other parts of the country.

As of January 12, the Department of Health has reported a total of 3,058,634 COVID-19 cases, of which, 208,164 are active.
