MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines – Diliman on Sunday announced the temporary closure of the Academic Oval and other public spaces in its Diliman campus starting Jan. 10, amid rising cases of COVID-19.

“Dahil sa biglaan at mabilis na pagtaas ng mga kaso ng COVID-19 sa bansa, muling isasara ang Academic Oval at iba pang mga pampublikong espasyo sa UP Diliman simula Enero 10,” it said in a Facebook post.

(Due to the sudden and rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in the country, the Academic Oval and other public spaces in UP Diliman will be closed again starting January 10.)

In an earlier statement, UP Diliman also announced that its offices and units will operate on a work-from-home arrangement also from January 10 to 18.

The country is currently in the middle of an exponential rise in COVID-19 cases in the country, which health experts attributed to the holiday revelry and the Omicron variant of concern.

Earlier, the health department reported the highest registered number of daily new cases at 28,707 since the pandemic started in 2020.

Active infections currently number 128,114, and the confirmed total at 2,965,447.
