MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine General Hospital in Manila will temporarily close its maternity ward amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
The PGH has 230 COVID-19 admissions as of Wednesday, a rapid increase from just 30 COVID-19 patients on Christmas Day.
Only life/limb-threatening conditions, trauma, stroke, and heart attack cases will be accepted in emergency rooms, the PGH announced on Facebook on Thursday.
But the problem is not limited to the PGH. Other hospitals in the National Capital Region have been facing a surge of COVID-19 patients and staffers have been calling out sick amid the suspected local transmission of omicron, a highly contagious coronavirus variant.
The Philippines logged 10,775 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. OCTA Research Group predicts 20,000 new cases by Friday.
