LIGAO CITY, Albay, Philippines — Iriga City in Camarines Sur province closed its park on Sunday after it recorded two new COVID-19 cases.
“Our primordial concern is the safety of the general public. We would like to ask an apology if the decision is abrupt, but we hope you all understand that it’s for the common good,” Iriga Mayor Madel Alfelor said in a statement on her Facebook account.
The temporary closure is meant to avoid the gathering of crowds at the park. It is still unknown when it will be reopened to the public.
Authorities have not determined if the two new cases were caused by Omicron variant, Alfelor said.
The two new cases ended the three-week streak of zero new COVID-19 cases in Iriga.
As of Sunday, Iriga has recorded 895 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started in 2020. The city also has two active cases, 893 recoveries, and 51 deaths.
Alfelor asked the public to keep observing health protocols at all times, particularly the wearing of a facemask and physical distancing.
