Just a few days left before the end of another challenging year, which means not only a new beginning for everyone but also a reminder that another momentous event in the Philippines is set to unfold in a few months – the May 2022 national elections.
As the country prepares for the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term and looks forward to who his successor would be, the Inquirer Group of Companies is gearing up for the relaunch of Inquirer Volunteer Corps (IVC), a volunteer program founded in 2016 that strives to empower the youth and ordinary citizens of the Philippines by covering and participating in events that influence the nation.
Starting Dec. 20, the Inquirer will be looking for interested volunteers who will take part remotely in the monitoring of election campaigns and obtaining election-related news scoops amid the pandemic. For this initiative, the Inquirer is calling on registered voters from Metro Manila, North Luzon, Cebu, and Davao to join the IVC.
The volunteer program is open for students, working professionals, and freelance journalists who will conduct digital newsgathering, or produce, publish, and tell their own stories on the Inquirer website using multimedia formats. Their stories will appear mainly on Inquirer’s social media platforms.
Prior to coverage assignments, aspiring volunteers will be screened and trained by the Inquirer team on topics such as basic news writing, mobile journalism, investigative journalism, social media guidelines, as well as on the editorial standards of the Inquirer, including rules on the accuracy, ethics, and copyright.
Each volunteer will receive an Inquirer Volunteer kit along with a digital certificate as proof of their participation in the volunteer program.
