MANILA, Philippines — The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has advised public telecommunication entities and internet service providers to prepare for a surge in internet traffic this Christmas season.
In a memorandum dated Friday but released to the media on Sunday, NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba noted that internet traffic is projected to increase during the holidays.
Cordoba also mentioned a previous statement from the Department of Health urging the holding of Christmas parties virtually due to the threat of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
“During the period from 17 December 2021 to 07 January 2022, please observe a heightened level of emergency preparedness to ensure minimal disruption and downtime strictly complying with the prescribed service performance standards at all times,” the NTC official told telco entities and internet service providers.
“You are hereby directed to fast track your maintenance efforts, increase internet/broadband capacities, and ensure that business continuity and disaster recovery protocols are in place and functioning, 24/7,” he added.
