A luxury BMW sport utility vehicle that was stolen in Turkey in 2006 wound up in Manila after it changed hands in two countries in the Middle East, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Highway Patrol Group (HPG) found.

Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina, the HPG director, said records revealed that the BMW X5 imported by Wilson Espares was originally stolen in Turkey in November 2006 and later changed hands in Saudi Arabia and Syria before it was shipped to the country.

Espina said this came to light after Espares applied for an HPG Motor Vehicle Clearance in May.

“The acquisition of the motor vehicle by the owner from the Bureau of Customs could be recognized but its status as a stolen vehicle from the country of origin was not immediately determined,” an HPG report said.
