MANILA, Philippines — One of the three children of slain veteran journalist Jesus “Jess” Malabanan wants to follow in his footsteps.

Mila Malabanan, Jess’ widow, said their youngest child is a graduating college student taking up Journalism in a university in San Fernando, Pampanga.

“Siya ang papalit daw sa papa niya. ‘Yun ang gusto niya (He wants to follow his father, that’s what he wants),” Mila said in an interview with Teleradyo.

“Graduating siya ng Journalism (He’s a graduating student taking up Journalism),” Mila added.

Malabanan was a correspondent for Manila Standard, Bandera, and Reuters. Last December 8, he was shot dead inside their store in Calbayog in Western Samar.

Malabanan covered the defense beat until the 1990s when he transferred residence in Pampanga.

Mila is now appealing for justice to be served.

Mila said Jess’ remains will be brought back to Pampanga on Saturday.
