DOH flags Eastern Samar, Zamboanga Sibugay over uptick in COVID cases

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday flagged Eastern Samar and Zamboanga Sibugay over a slight rise in its average daily attack rate (ADAR) and positive one-week and two-week COVID-19 growth rates.

“There are two areas, Eastern Samar and Zamboanga Sibugay, showing positive one-week and two-week growth rates. A slight increase was seen in their average daily attack rates from the previous week but remained at less than one per 100,000 population,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reported in a media forum.

Based on DOH data, Eastern Samar’s ADAR increased from 0.08 on November 8 to November 21 to 0.11 on November 22 to December 5.

Zamboanga Sibugay’s ADAR, on the other hand, rose from 0.61 to 0.73 during the same period.

Meanwhile, the moving one-week growth rate of Eastern Samar is at 200 percent while 338.46 percent for Zamboanga Sibugay during the recent week.

For the moving two-week growth rate, Eastern Samar posted 33.33 percent from -25 percent while Zamboanga Sibugay listed 20.69 percent from -29.76 percent.

“Despite this positive growth, both areas remained to be at low risk case classification with both total COVID-19 beds and ICU (intensive care unit) at low risk,” Vergeire explained.

As of December 4, Eastern Samar’s bed utilization is at 21.28 percent while its ICU utilization is at 21.57 percent.

Zamboanga Sibugay’s bed and ICU utilization, meantime, stood at 23.08 percent and 15.58 percent, respectively.

Currently, all areas in the country “are at minimal to low risk case classification and are under Alert Level 2.”

The country remains as minimal risk case classification for COVID-19, Vergeire said.
