THE much-anticipated fight between former WBO superflyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona and Carlos “El Flaco” Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic will be held on March 17 at the Hoops Dome in Lapulapu City.
Cebu boxing fans can also look forward to an added bonus because of the addition of the WBO World Youth Flyweight title bout between Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar and Alejandro “Terrible” Morales of Mexico.
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani informed Cebu Daily News that this fight card headlines the grand opening of the Pinoy KO television show, which will be shown on AKTV.
The 22-year-old Saludar (14W-0L-1D, 11 KOs) will be tested when he faces his first Mexican opponent.
This will be Saludar’s second fight in Cebu. Two years ago, he beat Ryan Illustrisimo by unanimous decision in Mabolo.
Gello-ani’s SGG Promotions later decided to promote Saludar’s fights in Cavite. He went on a hot streak, stopping eight opponents in a row and winning WBO regional and youth titles. He is the brother of 2010 Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar.
The 23-year-old Morales (13W-1L, 7 KOs) will be fighting for the first time outside of his country. He suffered his lone career loss last year by first round TKO to Julio Ceja but bounced back with a points win over Israel Rojas.
Meanwhile, SGG Promotions will have a double main event at the Cebu Coliseum on March 4.
It will feature the WBO Asia Pacific Interim Championship between Weng Haya and Jose Ocampo of Manila and the mandatory defense of Philippine lightweight champion Jay Solmiano against Rey Labao (challenger). /Correspondent Rene Bonsubre
