MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is winning its fight against COVID-19, Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudero believes.

In an interview on DWIZ on Saturday, Escudero, a senatorial aspirant in the 2022 polls, was quizzed if he sees the Philippines as being victorious against COVID-19.

“As of now, yes, ‘wag lang tayo magka-second or third wave tulad ng nangyayari sa Europa at sa America,” he answered.

(As of now, yes, as long as we would not have a second wave or a third wave like that in Europe and America.)

Europe has become the COVID-19 pandemic’s epicenter anew after it logged surges in COVID-19 cases.

According to Escudero, vaccination is one factor why the Philippines has posted lower COVID-19 infections.

“Ang isang dahilan kung ba’t bumababa ang kaso ay marami nang nabakunahan. Tamaan man ng COVID, asymptomatic. So, hindi na siya magpapa-test, hindi magpapa-ospital, so, hindi na natin malalaman,” he explained.

(One reason why cases decrease is that many are getting vaccinated. COVID-19 may infect them, they may be asymptomatic. So he/she will not undergo a test, hospitalization, so we would not know.)

“‘Yun ang pangunahing dahilan kung bakit bumababa ‘yung bilang pero ‘di nangangahulugang wala nang may COVID,” he continued.

(That’s the main reason why COVID cases are declining, but it does not mean that there are no infections anymore.)

Sorsogon only has 16 active COVID-19 cases, Escudero said.
