5,188 get warning for smoking

More than 5,000 smokers have received a warning from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in line with its campaign against smoking in public places.

From May 31 to June 14, a total of 5,188 smokers were given warnings by MMDA personnel who went around public areas.

But starting July 1, MMDA environmental enforcers will start issuing tickets to smokers spotted in public places within the perimeter of Metro Manila’s major and secondary roads.

The public places include bus and jeepney terminals, loading and unloading bays, footbridges, schools, hospitals, youth recreation centers and government offices.

First-time violators will be fined P500.
