MANILA, Philippines — Noting the decrease in COVID-19 cases nationwide, President Rodrigo Duterte quipped on Tuesday that people should try not to get infected at the same time and instead agree on who would get sick first.

In his weekly taped “Talk to the People,” Duterte noted that Davao City, his hometown, only logged one new COVID-19 case on Tuesday.

“I hope it happens just one by one,” he said in Filipino. “So, those of who might get sick with COVID, make an agreement that you will get it just one at a time — not all at the same time because then we will have a problem.”

The president informed the public early on in the briefing that the country was “slowly but surely” beating COVID-19, citing recent data.

According to the Department of Health’s data on Tuesday, 1,153 more patients nationwide were infected with the coronavirus, driving the overall case count to 2,827,820.
