MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has tested positive for coronavirus, a day after he physically attended the Senate plenary debates on his agency’s 2022 budget.

Lorenzana confirmed this in a text message to INQUIRER.net on Wednesday.

“The result came out this morning from a test yesterday afternoon after the Senate hearing,” he said.

“I am asymptomatic,” he told reporters in a separate message, adding he has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“I’ll observe myself for several days, after that I’ll have another swab,” Lorenzana added.

Senators were also informed about Lorenzana testing positive for the virus.

“We just found out through the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms that the good Secretary of National Defense is positive,” Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri told his colleagues during Wednesday’s budget deliberations.

“We were quite exposed yesterday,” Zubiri added.
