MANILA, Philippines — The petition seeking to annul the certificate of candidacy (COC) of presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has been raffled to the second division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“The case has been raffled to the 2nd Div. Owing to a large number of cases on the docket, no summons for this particular case has been issued yet, but is expected within the week,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez told reporters in a Viber message on Tuesday night.
The petition filed last November 2 asserts that Marcos is not eligible to run for any public office since the Quezon City Regional Trial Court convicted him in 1995 for his failure to file income tax returns.
“Marcos is not eligible to run for any public office as he is, plainly, a convicted criminal. Marcos was convicted by the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City in a July 27, 1995, decision for his multiple failures to file income tax returns,” the petitioners said in a previous statement.
The camp of Marcos, however, dismissed the petition as a “predictable nuisance” and a mere “propaganda.”
