MANILA, Philippines — A police bomb disposal team on Friday rushed to a street in Tondo, Manila following reports of a hand grenade being found — but it turned out to be a novelty cigarette lighter.
Around 8:30 a.m., police said a garbage collector discovered what was believed to be an MK2 fragmentation grenade on Perfecto Street corner Old Torres Street in Tondo, Manila. The discovery caused a commotion.
The trash hauler reported it to Barangay 157 executive officer Ernesto De Leon for safekeeping, who immediately reported the matter to the Tayuman Police Community Precinct.
“Lighter lang na granada,” Lt. Col Harry Lorenzo III, station commander of MPD Station 7, said of the discovered material during a phone interview in INQUIRER.net.
(It was only a lighter grenade.)
“Nahukay lang sa basurahan, pero wala namang ano ‘yun, hindi naman siya tototoong granada, replica lang po,” Lorenzo added.
(It was dug in the trash, but it’s nothing. Not a real grenade. Just a replica.)
The Manila Police District-Explosive Ordnance Division determined that it was only a replica during its post-blast investigation.
The replica is now under the custody of authorities.
