MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law a measure postponing the first regular elections of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to 2025.
Republic Act No. 11593, which was signed by Duterte on Thursday but released to the media on Friday, provides that BARMM’s first regular parliamentary elections be postponed from 2022 to 2025.
This is as the transition of the Bangsamoro is likewise extended until 2025.
The elections should be held and synchronized with the 2025 national elections.
Under the new law, the President may appoint 80 new members of the BARMM’s interim government, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, who shall serve up to June 30, 2025.
The BARMM government said Duterte has signed into law a bill extending the Bangsamoro transition period until 2025, effectively postponing the region’s first parliamentary elections from 2022 to 2025.
Malacañang has yet to release a copy of the newly-signed law to the media.
