MANILA, Philippines — A Taiwanese man who has been wanted in his home country for 17 years for attempting to kill a compatriot was arrested in Real town in Quezon, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Wednesday.
In a report to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, immigration authorities said 53-year-old Huang Kuan-I was arrested on October 11.
Huang is subject of an outstanding warrant that the Hualien prosecutor’s office in Taiwan issued against him in 2004.
Aside from his pending arrest warrant against Huang, he is also overstaying in the Philippines as he arrived in the country in April 2009, while his passport expired in February 2019.
“Aside from being an undesirable alien, he will also be deported for being an undocumented alien because his passport already expired in February 2019 and has not been renewed since,” BI-fugitive search unit (FSU) acting chief Rendel Ryan Sy said.
“He fled to the Philippines a year before a Taiwanese judge sentenced him to eight years in prison for attempted murder,” Sy added.
The BI said Huang was convicted for shooting and seriously wounding his victim in Hualien, Taiwan in 2004 following a heated argument.
Huang will be detained at the BI warden facility in Taguig City pending the implementation of his deportation. He will also be placed in the immigration blacklist and banned from re-entering the country.
