Chavit drops bid for Ilocos Sur vice gov ‘to unite family’

LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Sur’s political kingpin and Narvacan Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson dropped Monday, Oct. 11, his candidacy for Ilocos Sur vice governor in the 2022 elections.

Chavit, who filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Oct. 1, withdrew from the race, which pitted him against his son Ryan.

The Singson patriarch also confirmed that Ryan’s wife, Patch Savellano-Singson, backed out from the race for the gubernatorial seat, which Chavit’s younger brother, Jerry, is eyeing.

These left Ryan and Jerry running unopposed for the province’s top posts.

The political disarray among the family stemmed from “miscommunication,” said Chavit when he spoke to local reporters after filing his withdrawal from the race.

Chavit said he decided to “unite” his family, which was torn by politics, he added.

It is not clear if Ryan’s father-in-law, reelectionist first district representative Deogracias Victor Savellano, would also drop from the race to give way to his brother, Ronald.

“I hope he (Savellano) would be able to think about dropping from the race,” said Chavit, who previously said it was a condition he set to withdraw his candidacy.
