MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported 12,159 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, and a much higher number of recoveries at 27,727, bringing down the active cases to 90,927.

These numbers bring the total cases to 2,666,652 and total recoveries to 2,536,011.

Meanwhile, the new cases account for 15.9 percent of only 53,880 individuals tested. The testing output is slightly lower compared to the past few days’ which consistently exceeded 55,000.

The death toll, on the other hand, increased to 39,624 after the DOH reported 119 additional deaths.

Of the total patients currently afflicted with the serious respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, 88.4 percent are suffering mild cases, 16.2 percent are asymptomatic, 6.70 percent moderate, 3.4 percent severe, and 1.4 percent critical.

However, two laboratories were not able to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System in the total tests conducted on October 8, the DOH said. These labs contribute, on average, 0.1 percent of samples tested and 0.1 percent of positive individuals.

The health agency also said that 47 duplicates were removed from the total case count — of which 32 were recoveries.

“Moreover, 71 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” said the DOH.

The DOH also reported that 70 percent of ICU beds, 54 percent of isolation beds, 56 percent of ward beds, and 50 percent of ventilators are currently in use across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Metro Manila, meanwhile, occupied ICU beds are currently at 69 percent, isolation beds at 44 percent, ward beds at 50 percent while 51 percent of available ventilators were also being used in the region, said DOH.
