No drama: Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano gives way to sis-in-law
MANILA, Philippines — Incumbent Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano would not vie for reelection as he gives way to her sister-in-law, who is seeking the mayoral post in next year’s local polls.
According to Cayetano, he will not run for another term because he would like to focus on the city’s COVID-19 response – opening the opportunity for Taguig City 2nd District Rep. Lani Cayetano, wife of his brother, former Speaker and Taguig-Pateros 1st District Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, who is eyeing a return to the Senate via the May 2022 elections.
Lani had served as a three-term mayor of the city prior to becoming a legislator.
“I will continue to focus on the problems on the programs and issues [of our city],” Mayor Cayetano said in a recorded video on Friday.
“In the coming months, while the rest of the nation focuses on the elections, we in Taguig will focus on the solutions needed by our citizens,” he added.
He also stressed that he believes in the capabilities of her sister-in-law.
“I will give way and I fully accept it because I believe in the leadership of Ate Lani,” he said.
“Fellow citizens, it has been my life’s greatest privilege to serve you,” he also said.
