MANILA, Philippines — Filipino journalist Maria Ressa is one of two media workers who won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their work to protect freedom of the press and freedom of expression, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.
According to the Nobel Prize management, Ressa, who is also chief executive officer of an online news site Rappler, will share the award with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov.
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace,” The Nobel Prize said in a tweet.

Ressa has been a staunch advocate of press freedom amid the alleged oppressive regime of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Ressa and Rappler have faced several cases that they claimed were only meant to harass critics of the administration. She also denounced Duterte’s claims that she is a fraud, adding that the President may only be seeing too much fraud around him.
