MANILA, Philippines — Labor leader Leody de Guzman accepted on Tuesday the progressive groups’ nominations to run for president in the 2022 elections.
“Tinatanggap ko ang hamon niyo. Laban talaga tayo, laban talaga,” De Guzman said on during the national convention of the Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM).
(I accept your challenge. We will fight and continue to fight.)
PLM chairman Sonny Melencio also confirmed that De Guzman has accepted the nomination and that he will officially run as president for their party.
“We want everyone to know, tatakbo, lalaban si Ka Leody De Guzman as standard bearer or president ng PLM (Ka Leody De Guzman will run and fight as the standard bearer or president of PLM),” said Melencio during the event.
De Guzman, who is a known champion of workers’ rights, also serves as the chairman of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP).
De Guzman ran for senator in the 2019 midterm elections but quickly conceded defeat after landing 38th place in the race.

Senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao, as well as Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso have also already declared their presidential bid in the 2022 Elections.
Another is former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, who has promised to drop out if Vice President Leni Robredo decides to run.

The period for filing the certificate of candidacy begins on Oct. 1 and ends on Oct. 8.
